Upper Basin sloughs and wetlands have been connected by drainage ditches which then have been channeled to Devils Lake proper via large drainage projects such as Channel A, Big Coulee, Little Coulee, Starkweather Coulee, Mauvais Coulee and the Edmore Coulees.

Amounts of up to 600,000 acre-feet of water from the upper basin have drained into Devils Lake in both 2009 and 2011, causing the lake to rise by about three feet per year.
